Construction Site Safety Inspection Checklist for Active Jobs

A construction site safety inspection checklist organizes a field review of changing jobsite conditions. This checklist covers PPE, elevated work, scaffolds, ladders, excavations, electrical hazards, moving equipment, housekeeping, fire protection, and emergency arrangements. Superintendents and competent persons can use its prompts to identify missing protections and coordinate corrections across the trades working on site.

Construction site safety inspection checklist: when it’s needed

Under 29 CFR 1926.20(b)(2), employers must provide frequent and regular inspections of jobsites, materials, and equipment by designated competent persons. This checklist helps structure those rounds but does not set every required inspection interval. Construction fall protection generally begins at 6 feet under 1926.501, with separate provisions for certain activities. Scaffold requirements appear in 1926.451, ladder requirements in 1926.1053, and excavation provisions in 1926.651 and 1926.652. Adapt the walkthrough to the work underway, including changes between crews or phases.

How to use this construction site safety inspection checklist

  1. Identify the active trades, planned tasks, and designated competent persons before setting the inspection route and scope.
  2. Examine edges, access ladders, scaffold platforms, and excavations with the person responsible for each specialized hazard.
  3. Check temporary power protection and overhead line exposures against the actual equipment, voltage, and applicable work rules.
  4. Verify housekeeping, fire equipment, chemical information, and emergency contacts wherever crews are currently working or staging materials.
  5. Stop or restrict unsafe work as appropriate, assign corrections to responsible supervisors, and verify protection before allowing affected tasks.

Before you use this construction site safety inspection checklist: what to fill in and check

  • Names and authority of designated competent persons for scaffolds, excavations, and other applicable activities.
  • Trade-specific fall protection provisions, excavation conditions, and the protective systems selected for today’s work.
  • Temporary power arrangements, utility information, and required clearances for the equipment being operated.
  • Emergency access routes, first aid coverage, and fire protection needs as the project layout changes.

Construction site safety inspection checklist questions

Who can serve as the competent person for construction inspections?

Under 29 CFR 1926.32(f), a competent person can identify existing and predictable hazards and has authority to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them. A title alone does not establish that ability or authority. Designate people whose knowledge matches the work being inspected. One supervisor may not have the necessary expertise for every scaffold, excavation, or specialized activity.

Does a daily site checklist replace scaffold and trench inspections?

A general round is not a substitute for the specific inspections required for those activities. Scaffolds must be inspected by a competent person before each work shift and after occurrences affecting structural integrity under 29 CFR 1926.451(f)(3). Excavation inspections under 1926.651(k)(1) address daily conditions and hazard-increasing events. Coordinate those reviews and record their findings separately when needed.

Are GFCIs the only permitted protection for construction temporary power?

Section 1926.404(b)(1) provides for GFCIs or an assured equipment grounding conductor program for the equipment and circuits it covers. The program option has specific implementation duties; it is not simply a decision to omit GFCIs. Review the actual temporary power installation with knowledgeable personnel, and amend the checklist’s broad GFCI prompt to reflect the applicable protective arrangement.
