Rollers and other two-way machines
- Rollers, compactors, front-end loaders, bulldozers and similar machines that travel in both directions carry a horn that can be told apart from the surrounding noise, sounded as needed whichever way the machine moves (29 CFR 1926.602(a)(9)(i)).
- Compacting or earthmoving equipment with an obstructed view to the rear isn’t used in reverse unless a backup alarm distinguishable from the surrounding noise is working or a worker signals that it’s safe (1926.602(a)(9)(ii)).
- Mark the strip where rollers come out of the shop bays, and keep the walk to the meeting point off it.
