From source drawing to reviewable draft

A hand-drawn plan is the start. The safety information comes next.

Photograph one readable page to create an editable source-trace draft. Then confirm designated exits, usable paths, posting orientation, and current building details with the people who know the site.

Start with the source drawing

A drafting aid for U.S. workplacesโ€”not an approval, survey, or substitute for site-specific review. Requirements can vary by building and locality.

SOURCE SAMPLE ยท ILLUSTRATIVEExisting drawing referenceThis source sample explains input quality. It is not a customer plan, tested reconstruction, or product result.

01

The useful distinction

A sketch can start the discussion.

It gives a team an outline of spaces, openings, and handwritten labels to compare.

Designated exits and usable paths come from a site check, not pencil marks.

02

Illustrative source preparation

Prepare the hand-drawn page for comparison.

This owned illustration uses a synthetic plan to show a readable source page. It is not a browser recording or evidence that a sketch upload has been accepted.

03

Consultant-style review prompts

Ask building-specific route questions.

01

Name designated exits

A door is not automatically an exit. Mark only exits your site has designated and checked.

02

Walk the usable route

Do not draw through storage, locked areas, or a path the site has not checked.

03

Place the reader on the page

Set orientation and a verified โ€œYou are hereโ€ location for each posting point.

04

Record what is actually there

Confirm fixtures, alarms, stairs, and assembly information before adding them.

04

Illustrative annotated source plan

Add fire escape details as review items.

This owned illustration adds fictional safety annotations to a clean synthetic plan. It is not a reconstruction demonstration, route calculation, or verified safety placement.

05

Keep the evidence honest

Keep pencil evidence and site facts distinct.

Reasonable first-pass input

  • One floor clearly shown on a flat page
  • Legible room labels, walls, and door openings
  • A drawing your team will compare to the original

Resolve before relying on it

  • Blurred, cropped, or multi-floor pages
  • Unknown exit designation or changed conditions
  • Unverified fixture, route, or assembly details

06

A practical walk-through

Review room-specific posting.

  1. Start at each intended posting point. Confirm the map orientation and reader location.
  2. Follow the marked path. Check it is unobstructed under normal conditions.
  3. Check vertical travel deliberately. Mark stairs where relevant; do not imply elevator use.
  4. Stand at the assembly location. A drawing can lag behind room use, doors, equipment, and procedures.

07

Open the workspace

Bring in the hand-drawn source plan.

Use the original drawing as your comparison reference while editing the draft.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this evacuation map generator really free?

Yes โ€” you can generate your first OSHA-aligned evacuation map draft completely free. Just upload a floor plan and our AI drafts a professional map in about 30 seconds. No credit card required.

Are the generated maps aligned with OSHA?

Our AI drafts maps that follow OSHA 29 CFR 1910.36โ€“37 and NFPA 101 Life Safety Code standards. Every map includes clearly marked exits, fire extinguisher locations, assembly points, and directional evacuation arrows. Supervisor review is required before posting to your facility.

What file formats can I upload?

We accept PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, BMP, TIFF, AVIF, HEIC, SVG, PDF, DOC/DOCX, PPT/PPTX, XLS/XLSX, ODT, ODP, ODS, DXF, and DWG floor plans. Office and CAD files are converted securely before processing; PDF uploads let you choose the source page.

How long does map generation take?

Most maps are generated in 20โ€“40 seconds. Complex multi-floor plans may take slightly longer. You see the preview instantly โ€” create a free account (no credit card) to download the file.

Can I edit the map after generation?

Yes โ€” every generated map opens in a free drag-and-drop editor where you can move, resize, and recolor exit signs, routes, and equipment icons. Enterprise features like multi-floor support and branded maps are available on paid plans.

Is my floor plan data secure?

Yes. All uploads are encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and processed in secure cloud environments. We do not share your floor plans with third parties.

08

Before a map leaves the desk

Make the final comparison a site conversation.

Compare the source. Correct walls, doors, room names, and unclear areas against the drawing and current conditions.

Confirm safety locations. Mark actual fixtures and alarm devicesโ€”not symbols inferred from old paper.

Plan for people. Coordinate evacuation assistance around the actual arrangements and needs of the site.

Review changes. Update the map when layouts, exits, fixtures, procedures, or posting locations change.

10

Questions before you start

Source image in, review on site.

Can I use a hand-drawn floor plan?

Yes. Start with one flat, readable page showing rooms, walls, doors, and corridors. Compare the editable draft with the original drawing and current site conditions.

Will the page decide which door is an exit?

No. A door on a sketch is not automatically a designated exit. Confirm exit designations and route choices with people responsible for the current building.

Does the draft include a โ€œYou are hereโ€ marker?

You can add one while editing, but its position and map orientation need checking for each posting location. One floor plan can need more than one posted version.

Can I rely on symbols shown on an old sketch?

Not without a current check. Existing marks may be stale or unclear. Confirm equipment, alarms, stairs, instructions, and assembly information on site.

Is this an approved fire escape diagram?

No. OSHAMap helps organize a reviewable working draft. Review current conditions, workplace procedures, accessibility planning, and applicable local requirements before posting or distributing a map.
